Pioneer Days and Brother Dyer's

This past weekend has been filled with several different activities. Last Friday night (7/24/09) our ward held it's First Annual Pioneer Day Festival. It was a blast! We had a potluck that stated at 6 p.m. in the cultural. Of course, there was a wide assortment of delicious food to pick from. For dessert, we had a pie contest. There was 10 different types of pies and we had to pick the best tasting fruit pie, best tasting cream pie, best looking fruit pie, and best looking cream pie. And the brothers and sisters of our ward did an excellent job of bringing their best. The pies were served in mini cups (like you get at Costco). Jon and I enjoyed the Strawberry/Rhubarb pie the best. The peanut butter cream pie and the key lime pie were my favorites for the cream pies. While the pie contest and dinner were being eaten, all of the wonderful musicians played hymns and songs about the pioneers. They are the best. Unfortunately, Sister Palmer will be moving to Pennsylvania this week, so her talent is leaving us. :-(

At 7 p.m. we went outside and enjoyed all of the games. We got to choose from water balloon toss. When Brian tossed the balloon to Jay it exploded after the 5th toss. So Jay and Brian decided to use the buckets of water that the water balloons were in to get each other. Needless to say, that didn't last long. Their buckets were quickly taken away. The kids also enjoyed potato sack races, wheel barrow races, tug of war, egg tosses, and the little kids decided to play tug of war with Jon, plus attacked Jay. Elisa and her friend Taylor won several of the events. When the egg broke in Elisa's hand she made sure that everyone got to shake her hand.

By 9 p.m. the games were completed and the cultural hall was cleaned. Elisa managed to find a pumpkin pie to bring home with her. She smashed several pieces together to make a ball. That pumpkin pie ball is still in the freezer with a fork in it. Jon calls it her meatball.

Saturday morning, I woke all of the kids up bright and early to go to Brother Dyer's home. He is an elderly gentleman in our ward about 85 years old. He wanted to have his home repainted. We arrived around 8 a.m. to join the other members of our ward. Elisa, Taylor, and I were the only girls. Brother Dyer, who had 5 boys, said girls are good for nothing with a big grin. Jon, Elisa, Taylor, Elder Clifford, and I were in charge of painting the kitchen. Noticed how the only girls got the kitchen. Jay and another crew worked in a back bedroom and bathroom. After 3 hours of painting the entire house had been repainted. When we left the missionaries were there to help put the house back in order.

To treat the kids I took them to the pool for several hours. The weather was quite mild, so sitting in the shade wasn't too bad. I did join them in the water for a little bit. The water felt so good! Jay ditched us to go to Jake's house with Tristin for some video games on his PS3. Elisa and Taylor laid out in the sun trying to tan.

It was a great weekend with some great friends! We are blessed to have these opportunities to know such wonderful families. And we are grateful for the opportunity to give service to a fellow man. Much love- Tammi
