One tradition that occurs in the South are Beauty Walks. These are sponsored by the schools here. Elisa decided she wanted to participate. We gave her the option of Christmas presents or Beauty Walk. She choose the Beauty Walk. We spent a Saturday early in January and found her a dress. We found her dress at a local consignment shop for only $30. I created her sleeves from the trimmings I cut from the bottom of her dress. The week before we found shoes at Payless Shoe Source. Aunt Michelle sent her jewelry. Mema sent her money for a manicure. She was a princess for a day.
Dad took her to get her manicure first thing in the morning. Mom took her to get her make up done. Mom curled her hair. The Beauty Walk started at 3 pm, but she had to check in at 2 pm. There were over 100 participants between the 6, 7, and 8th grades. The girls walked out on the stage and the Emcee said a little intro about the girls. Elisa's interests includes texting and talking on the phone (she was in agreement with 90% of the other girls). There were a lot of beautiful dresses. Once all of the girls had their chance of walking in front of the judges, they were all brought on stage to announce the winners. They first announced the top 10 girls and from them the top 5 were picked.
I do not understand how the girls were judged or what they were looking for. Elisa did not make the top 10, but she had an awesome time. She is ready to sign up again next year. She is reading about pageants and searching for the perfect dress. After the beauty walk, our friends, Caroline and Chris Sprayberry joined us for dinner at Kobe Japanese Steakhouse. After not eating most of the day, the food was delicious even though it was 8 pm!
Elisa, it looked like you had a fab time getting ready and then participating. Are you taking classes in dance at school too? You will be a real southern belle by the time you leave the South. What a nice gramma, Mom and Dad to help you achieve this dream.
